Auscultation and diagnosis

If the rose is the queen of plants, the camellia is the emperor of the gardens. Plant among plants, the camellia is however not immune to possible inconvenience from nature. A blackish, sticky sheet may appear on their leaves. This black spot is commonly called sooty mold. It is a cluster of fungi that settles after an aphid attack. These insects reject honeydew, a sweet substance that promotes the development of fungi. The sooty mold is simply unsightly, it is not harmful to the plant.

Some recommendations

Since sooty mold is the logical result of an aphid attack, the best way to protect the camellia is to control aphids. Like any gardener, you know that ladybugs hunt these insects. So consider installing a ladybug nest in your garden. Just give them a boost and the ladybugs will do the rest to keep your camellia looking good. Nature is well made, isn't it?
